In Japan, a mug is an everyday companion. Coffee in the morning, green tea in the afternoon, roasted hojicha at night—one cup carries you through the day.
On these shelves, you’ll find mugs from kilns across Japan. The blue-and-white floral designs are called “sometsuke,” a traditional technique where patterns are painted in cobalt before glazing. The earthy, rustic mugs are stoneware—hold one, and you’ll feel the warmth of the clay in your hand.
Some mugs come with a lid or a built-in tea strainer. They’re perfect for brewing loose-leaf Japanese tea, and they make wonderful souvenirs.
Many of our mugs are hand-painted, so no two are exactly alike. Finding those small differences is part of the joy of Japanese ceramics. Please pick one up and feel its weight. Most are surprisingly light—easy to carry home, wherever home may be.
