Lifting a lid, and finding tea still warm beneath it — in Japan, that small moment is part of hospitality itself. This corner features kumidashi, lidded tea cups used when serving green tea to guests. The lid keeps the tea warm and holds in its aroma until the very moment it is enjoyed, and opening it reveals the painted design inside, like a small gift. Here you will find sets from Japan’s celebrated porcelain regions, including Arita, Kutani, and Ko-Imari style patterns, many arranged as sets of five, the traditional number for welcoming guests. Some are paired with a dobin, a round teapot with a rattan handle, making a complete tea service that is popular as a gift. Cups from certain series can also be purchased individually, so please feel free to ask for the number you need. Take your time, and choose a lid design that makes you want to invite someone over for tea.
