Choosing Tableware for the Autumn Equinox<\/p>\n

Hello, and welcome to Sugiura Pottery, in Mishima, Japan.<\/p>\n

In Japan, the year is divided into twenty-four small seasons.
\nEach one lasts about two weeks.
\nToday, we enter Sh\u016bbun (the autumn equinox).
\nDay and night are almost the same length.
\nFrom here on, the nights slowly grow longer.<\/p>\n

This day falls in the middle of Higan (a week for remembering one’s ancestors).
\nMany families visit their family graves.
\nThey offer ohagi (soft rice balls covered in sweet red bean paste).
\nAlong the edges of rice fields, red spider lilies bloom.
\nThey appear right on time, almost every year.<\/p>\n

So, with the season changing, how about changing your tableware too?<\/p>\n

In summer, Japanese tables are full of glass and cool white porcelain.
\nIn autumn, people often switch to earthenware.
\nIn Japanese, we call it tsuchi-mono, meaning “things made of earth.”<\/p>\n

Earthenware feels warm in your hands.
\nThe surface is a little rough.
\nThe colors shift gently, never quite the same.
\nAutumn food looks calm and rich on these pieces.<\/p>\n

Take ohagi, for example.
\nPlace one on a small plate, called a mamezara (a tiny side dish).
\nA simple sweet suddenly feels like a special treat.<\/p>\n

Autumn is also the season for sanma (Pacific saury), a slim, silver fish.
\nIt is grilled whole, from head to tail.
\nA long, narrow plate holds it perfectly.<\/p>\n

For simmered taro or chestnuts, try a small, deep bowl.
\nIt keeps the food warm a little longer.<\/p>\n

Soon, the new rice harvest arrives.
\nIn Japan, this is called shinmai, and many people look forward to it all year.
\nWhy not choose a new rice bowl to welcome it?
\nFind one that fits your hand, with a rim that feels soft on your lips.
\nYou will use it every day, so take your time choosing.<\/p>\n

As the evenings grow longer, there is more time for tea.
\nTry a thick teacup with warm roasted green tea, called h\u014djicha.
\nWhen you change your tableware, you can feel the season in the palm of your hand.<\/p>\n
