This is Sugiura Pottery in Mishima, with our series on Japan’s twenty-four seasonal markers. Today: Rissh\u016b \u2014 the first day of autumn.<\/p>\n

That name is a little misleading. Rissh\u016b falls around August seventh, which in Japan is the hottest stretch of the year. The sun is fierce. The cicadas are relentless. Nobody outside would call this autumn.<\/p>\n

But the old calendar wasn’t describing temperature. It was marking a turn \u2014 the moment when summer reaches its peak and begins, invisibly, to tip the other way.<\/p>\n

And if you pay attention, you can find it. The evening breeze carries a drier smell than it did last week. The sun sets a few minutes earlier. The morning glories take a little longer to close. Autumn in Japan doesn’t arrive through heat. It arrives through sound and light.<\/p>\n

On the table, this season calls for adding rather than replacing.<\/p>\n

All summer, we’ve kept things cool \u2014 clear glass, white porcelain, cold noodles. Now you set down just one piece of earthenware among them.<\/p>\n

A small bowl in kohiki \u2014 a soft, chalky white slip over dark clay, warm rather than bright. Or a tiny plate in haiy\u016b, ash glaze, whose color comes from wood ash melted in the kiln. Run a finger across either one and you feel a faint roughness. That texture alone raises the temperature of the whole table by a degree or two.<\/p>\n

Colors shift, too. Deep greens and amber suit this moment. Oribe ware, glazed a bold copper green, still holds the color of summer leaves \u2014 while quietly announcing what’s coming. And amber glazes, which looked heavy in July, suddenly start to look delicious.<\/p>\n

The food changes alongside. Cold noodles first, still. Then grilled eggplant. Sesame-dressed greens. A hot soup, served in a small lidded bowl rather than a large one \u2014 because you can manage hot food again, in small amounts.<\/p>\n

Rissh\u016b is also the season of zansho-mimai: a short letter sent to friends acknowledging the lingering heat. A seasonal note, a small gift. Tableware belongs naturally in that tradition.<\/p>\n

Right now, our shelves hold both seasons at once. Glass beside clay. Cool white beside amber and green. It’s a slightly strange sight, and it only appears at this exact hinge of the year. If you’re in Mishima, come and take your time with it.<\/p>\n
